Moraira

Moraira Spain

Moraira is a small town in the La Marina about half way between Alicante 80 kms to its south and Valencia 108 kms to its north. The permanent population is only 9,500, although this rises to 30,000 in summer. There is a high proportion of expats living here on a permanent basis, and Moraira is very popular with affluent retirees. The majority of visitors are a mixture of Spanish, German, English, French and Dutch.

Teulada Moraira has some of the finest beaches along the Costa Blanca. From soft, sandy beaches ideal for children, to rocky coves and inlets enjoyed by snorkelers and scuba divers, to a wide range of water-sports for the more active tourist. Teulada Moraira is also blessed with having some of the cleanest beaches in Spain. With blue-flag status, they have a wide range of options available to suit all budgets and requirements.

Beaches along the Teulada Moraira coast: La Cala, Playa D'Ampolla, Platgetes, L'Andrago.

Moraira has more than 2,000 hectares under cultivation and 1,000 hectares of vineyards. The vineyard area, where they grow Muscatel grapes for wine making, is away from from the coast, up in the hills, where the climate is a little cooler, and the land is not so valuable for villa development.

Moraira has a wide choice of restaurants and bars to choose from in the town and surrounding area. So whether you are looking for a traditional Sunday lunch, or want to try a typically Spanish Paella, you are spoilt for choice. There are some great restaurants around the harbour, offering fresh locally caught fish, and some good priced Menu del Dias to be found.

Moraira has its fair share of fiestas, the most famous being the Moors and Christians in June. People line the streets to watch the marching parades, listen to the bands, see the stunning, colourful costumes and generally have a good time. The firework displays are always excellent, and always very loud! The aqua firework display is beautiful, with fireworks being set off over Moraira's main beach.

If either coming along the national highway N-332 or by AP-7 ( pay highway), the landscape is filled with vineyards and there is a nice wine cellar to be visited. There is a great street market in Teulada, just 8 kilometres inland from Moraira.

A single track railway runs from Denia to Alicante, stopping at Teulada station, not too far from Moraira. This is a very scenic ride cutting through the mountains and following the coastline, giving some impressive views along the way.

To sum it up, Moraira is really worth a visit. With its mild Moraira weather and its traditional way of life, the town found its way to maintain its identity and combine it with the goods of modern tourisim. If you are in the area, you should really visit Moraira and see for yourself.
