After enjoying the bars and pubs in Alicante for a few hours (more than enough to leave you dizzy and spellbound), it is a good idea to head to one of the nightclubs "discotecas". The nightclubs in Alicante belt out the funkiest of music and some also pack in a cultural show or two, to ensure that your entertainment entourage is not lacking on the options. In summer the Esplanada offers an easy, carefree ambience where cafes, restaurants and tavernas tumble out onto the pavements inviting you to sit and stay a while. There's no better place in the city to start your evening, sit with an aperitif, watch the world go slowly by and muse over where to eat. Alicante Nightlife - El Barrio For a lively evening out the largest and most popular area is 'El Barrio'. Originally the old city centre, it has a great medieval feel with its narrow winding streets and multi-coloured facades. Full of charm, it's bustling with energy and packed with dozens of bars catering for all tastes. Located around the Cathedral of St. Nicholas of Bari you can find bars with everything from live music to art exhibitions. Alicante Nightlife - Jazz Festival Very close by, as the narrow streets climb upwards, you are taken into the area of Santa Cruz, dotted around the church of the same name. Again you will find a multitude of bars mixed in amongst the colourful houses with wrought iron balconies overflowing with geraniums. A high point of the summer season in Santa Cruz is the annual Jazz Festival held in July and August with live jazz music in many of the bars, look out for the posters as you walk around. Alicante Nightlife - International Festival Finally, if you are more inclined towards ballet, opera or stage plays then make sure you check out the programme of the Teatro Principal, Alicante's large theatre. Whilst in the summer months, down in the plaza del Puerto Viejo near the Marina, you can delight in an International Festival offering world-class recitals of classical music, ballet, theatre and jazz.
