Alcoy Spain

Alcoy or Alcoi is a city and municipality located in the province of Alicante, Spain. Alcoy is the biggest industrial town in the area, the local authority reported 61,417 residents in 2010, of whom 5,334 were of non-Spanish origin.

The most important touristic celebration is Moors and Christians, it takes place around St George's Day at the 23rd of April.

The celebrations take several days and are the most famous around the entire Costa Blanca. If you have a chance to see it, mark it red in your calendar, it's an absolute "must see" for every tourist and local.

One of the great things about Alcoy, and indeed the region is the many rivers which pass through here. This gives rise to many different bridges and viaducts.

What to see in Alcoy

There are many great places to relax in Alcoy, especially in the old town city centre, as you're wondering around here, you will find plenty of bars and cafes for a relaxing break to your sightseeing. There are two magnificent gardens here called the Parc de Cantagallet and La Glorieta. There is also an archaeological museum in the Calle San Miguel and just across the road is the Museum de Fiestas.

Many outdoors rock paintings exist in Alcoy, and there are some ruins of an Iberian settlement with fragments of Greco-Roman pottery.

Buildings with artistic or historical interest in Alcoy include:

  • Castell de Bartxell (Barchell Castle, 12th century), of likely Muslim origin. It has a rectangular keep and a court with rainwater tank.
  • hermitage of St. Anthony the Abbot (14th-18th centuries)
  • the Archeological Museum
  • the convent of Sant Agusti, reconstructed in the 18th century with paintings of the 16th century
  • Catholic church of Santa Maria, in Valencian Baroque style
  • Torre de Na Valora, a watchtower from the 13th century

Weather conditions in Alcoy

Right through the year, the weather conditions in Alcoy are sun-drenched. You are virtually sure of sunlight throughout the year. Rainfall does not appear regularly but it is well established that it does rainfall every now and then. It can often mean a thirst-quenching pause from the faithful heat.

You actually have to be fussy if you cannot find something to go well with your taste buds in this area. Some of the most popular restaurants in Alcoy include Restaurante Lolo which is a restaurant that has been built in an old farmhouse, there are many beautiful ingredients used here to make up traditional recipes. Next is Restaurante Bambu, this is a popular restaurant which offers great money value and is very busy especially at midday.
